Elementary Curriculum

Cross Lutheran School offers those subjects commonly taught in elementary school. The course of study meets all educational requirements of the State of Texas and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Graduates are admitted to the public high schools of the area on the same basis as those from public schools. It is the policy of the school to cooperate with the public authorities in all matters that concern the welfare of the students and community.

In keeping with the philosophy, goals and objectives of the school, the curriculum reflects the needs and interests of the whole child, including the spiritual, academic, social, emotional and physical. Religious instruction is part of the daily routine, but more importantly, the identity of self as a child of God as he/she lives out his/her life and purposes for the future, serves as the foundation of the curriculum at Cross  Lutheran. Every child does take part in weekly chapel services, daily devotions, and other religious learning experiences. The Christian faith also becomes integrated throughout the curriculum through the planned instruction of the classroom teacher.  Our distinctively Lutheran approach to Christian education is evident in our daily routines.

A sound basic education is sought with emphasis in reading, writing and mathematics. It is our conviction that these basic tools are most important in preparing for higher education.  Individualized instruction is used in various areas of instruction with a constant effort being made to satisfy the individual's needs as they exist.

The curriculum is under constant study, and revisions will be made as needs become apparent. The following subjects are taught in our elementary school classrooms:

  • English/Language Arts (ELA)
    • Grammar
    • Reading
    • Writing
    • Handwriting
    • Spelling
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Studies

5th - 8th Grade History

I grew up as an MN Vikings fan in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. I enjoyed my time learning and growing at Zion Lutheran School from Kindergarten to 8th grade where I decided to become a Lutheran educator. Education was always a plan since my grandma was a 1st grade teacher in the public school system and would always pass down her old grade books and textbooks. But it was the teachers and Pastors at Zion Lutheran that put the joy of Lutheran education in my heart! I graduated from Concordia University, St. Paul, MN in 1998. I received my first call to Christ Lutheran School in Murray, UT. In Utah, I started as the 6th grade teacher, but throughout my 18 years in UT, I taught grades 6-8, the Athletic Director, Early Childhood Director, and Principal. Utah holds many great memories: I married Jeff in 2002. Jacob was born in 2006 and Carson in 2012. I received my Master of Education, emphasis in Science from Concordia University - Portland, OR in 2014. I received the Call to serve at Cross Lutheran Church and School in 2016. I love hands-on science and making science "fun" in the classroom. I love those moments when students want to come and just "hang out" in the classroom or just come back to say "hi". Come take a look at my whiteboard where former students have stopped by and left their mark! Making connections is part of being a family and that is what it is like at Cross. We are a family and I have been truly blessed by my family here at Cross. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13 During trials and tough times, I am reminded that it is Christ who is in and with me. It is through Him that I can do all things. It is also through those moments of JOY that we are reminded of the strength that he has already provided. I look forward to sharing the Joy of Christ each day with my students and having some fun with Science at the same time.Learn More

SUPPORT TEAM

My name is Melanie Douglas. I grew up on a small farm in Michigan. I attended Lutheran elementary school and two different Lutheran colleges. After raising our three children, my husband, Greg, and I are now empty nesters. I enjoy working in my flower beds and vegetable garden and also reading, watching old movies, and more recently going for long walks. For more than 30 years, I have taught in Lutheran schools in three different states; Wisconsin, Arizona, and Texas and many different grade levels from third through sixth. Here at Cross Lutheran, I teach fifth grade and art classes in the Middle School. Fifth grade is very much a transition year. Students have one foot in the elementary grades and the other foot in Middle School. Decimals, fractions, algebraic equations, literature, American history, grammar, science, and writing are among the many things fifth graders study. In addition, organizational skills, study skills, and responsibility are stressed as students strive to become independent learners. I love teaching children. I love getting to know them and building a relationship with them. I love the bond that each class forms as we become a tight little family for the nine months of that school year. I love watching a child light up as he or she suddenly catches on to a concept that has evaded him or her for what seems like a frustratingly long time. I love watching children help each other, defend each other, and love each other through thick and thin. I love watching their successes and watching them acknowledge and learn from their mistakes. I love listening to their stories about their weekends, their families, and their life. I love that I have the privilege of helping them see Jesus and his great love for them. I love teaching fifth graders. They can tie their own shoes and wipe their own noses. They still laugh at my jokes and think I can walk on water. I will love your fifth grader too if I have the pleasure and honor of teaching him or her here at Cross Lutheran School. Learn More
