Come LORD JESUS,
Be Our Guest,
And Let These Gifts,
To Us Be Blest.
AMEN.

I heard a great devotional thought shared by Steve Lund on this prayer at a spelling bee in Dallas about ten years ago, speaking about the interesting phrasing in the request, “Be our guest.”?

We are inviting the omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent God of the Universe to “Come”? and, “Be OUR?! Guest.”

This prayer aligns nicely with all that we are and offer in praise to our loving Father.  We know He is present, aware of every moment and everything, already.  This “invitation” is kindly an acknowledgement to our all-knowing Savior, that we are living in this moment fully, aware of the endless blessings He provides.  Asking Him to be our guest in a moment of thankfulness and praise to Him.

This devotional thought helped me to approach my meals with a new focus and appreciation of the gifts of the food eaten at meal time. I spend a little more time savoring the flavors, rather than just speed eating.

While it’s a fine dinner time traditional prayer, we prayed it for our school’s morning prayer this morning?  And there was no special donut treat surprise to follow.  This prayer, which often falls into rote memorization and routine, and is very often absent of thought, can work beyond the traditional blessing for the spaghetti and meatballs of supper tonight.

This common table prayer, in my opinion, could be one of those prayers offered at any time during the day.  Acknowledging to our God that we are fully present in a moment of blessing, be it watching: a son score his first basket for Cross Lutheran, McKenna Hospital heal up a daughter just right after a tonsillectomy, a beaming daughter wearing a beautiful dress for picture day, even challenges we can’t possibly comprehend as a blessing.

And let these gifts to us be blest.  Amen
